Make it a double

5 lovely stars!!!!!

Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.

My Thoughts….

“She represents everything that could possibly be good in my life now, and while it scares the shit out of me, I’m helplessly drawn to it. It makes me hopeful.”

This book was so great that I had to take a few minutes before I even tried to write this review. This book was tragic and beautiful. I don’t think there was one thing that I didn’t like about this book, which is extremely rare. Alyssa is nothing that Brody expects her to be and everything that he needs. Brody is a hot mess, literally, and Alyssa is probably the only person who can help him see the beauty that life has to offer again. But he has to be willing to except it, or her heart and everything she worked for with him is shattered.

“Yes, that was my heart that sighed, because Brody is beautiful. He’s been wrenched and broken, but he’s still so beautiful inside.”

Alyssa Myers is different than all of the other rich people you see out there. Her parents are ashamed of her but Alyssa is even more ashamed of the life that they live. She tries to use all of her trust fund to build the best no-kill shelter she can. She does most of the work herself and she loves it.

Alyssa’s character is pretty amazing. She works hard to care for animals that have nowhere else to go. Her character is also very brave. She goes against everything she has grown up with and just wants to be herself. She takes care of animals and spends time with her best friends. The way she takes care of Brody, even after he treats her like shit, is honorable. She knows he is having a hard time but she keeps trying anyway. She sees the real Brody and has no choice but to fall in love with him.

“For a moment, Brody doesn’t move, and I have all sorts of pornographic images shoot through my head.”

Brody Markham has had some problems. And that is putting it lightly. He has spent the last five years in jail for vehicular manslaughter. He knows what he did was wrong and he takes his punishment like he should. His time in jail has left him broken and dark. He has been away for five long years and he can’t connect with his family, his ex-girlfriend drops him the minute he goes in, and now there is another rich girl he wants nothing to do with.

Is she some freakin’ ray of sunshine or something that I should soak up and learn from?”

Brody wants nothing to do with Alyssa. The last rich girl he let in broke his heart and he won’t do it again. What happened to Brody was heartbreaking. His character starts out dark and disconnected. He can’t seem to be out in public or hang around his family and friends anymore. Alyssa changes all that for him. She sees him for what he really is and once he starts to take the much needed help his life starts to come back into focus. He now works somewhere he loves and he has found the perfect girl to fall in love with. He promises never to be willing to put someone else’s life before his again but again Alyssa changes all that.

This book was a really fun read. The characters have great chemistry and they seem to bring the best out in each other. They work well together. I loved all of the other characters too. I can’t wait to read the first one. I immediately went and bought that. Brody makes this book perfect so we will see if his brother can win me over too!
