Violet Blake’s debut novel sucked me in from the very first
page and kept me turning them until the end. The book was well written and the
flow was mostly perfect. Each character had their own backstory and each
character was well developed. Both the two main characters and their friends.
Blair is the daughter of a political figure and has had her
whole life planned out for her. She has never really felt what it was like to
be loved by her family and when she survives a near-death incident she realizes
she can’t live that way anymore. She breaks off her engagement and moves across
the country. On the night of her bachelorette party her friends make her a bet
she really can’t refuse. Blair is a really strong character. She has had a lot
of terrible things happen to her but she is still determined to make her life
work on her own. She has a great sense of humor and learns to live her own
life.
Sawyer has had his own troubled past. His parents were
murdered when he was younger and now he is just coming back out of the shell it
put him in. He still has horrible nightmares and now he is the new COO of
Callahan Breweries. He has been waiting for his chance with Blair and now that
he has found out about the bet his cousins made with her, he knows this is his
in. Sawyer is one sexy man in this book and he knows it. He is also sweet,
caring, and kind to Blair and tries to give her everything she needs to feel
comfortable. Sawyer has his own secrets that he tries to keep to himself but he
fights through them to be the man he needs to be for Blair.
Overall this was a great debut novel. There were some parts
of the story that I got a little bored with but there were not many. Sawyer and
Blair’s relationship was put together nicely and really well written. Violet
Blake can write some steamy scenes. There were enough to keep the book at a
decent steam level but too many to make the book feel like a porno and nothing
else. I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read more from this author!
