GUEST POST: The Science of Attraction By, Verity Jacobs

Synopsis

Kate Ramsey is at the top of her game.

She’s the hot new recruit at the most prestigious research institute in Germany, and she’s determined to live up to the hype — even if it means working day and night. Stress relief comes in the form of a no-nonsense affair with her neighbor, who also happens to be the director of the institute. Who says sex should be anything more than a contract between two people who have other things on their mind?

So when Tom Baker saunters into her life, Kate is understandably upset to see this well-oiled machine splutter and seize. Tom is young and smart, and far too pretty for his own good. Kate can’t help but be drawn to him, even if giving in to the attraction would mean risking everything she’s worked for.

And... relax

Kate Ramsey is definitely not renowned for being the most relaxed high-flyer. She has a job to do, after all. And as she’s set her sights on being one of the world’s most successful cell biologists, free time is not particularly easy to come by. Still, she’s no stranger to a good time, and she certainly has a list of things she likes to do once she sets foot outside of the lab.

1.   Spa day!

One of the many perks of living in Germany is that Kate has her pick of the spa towns that are dotted all over the region. These bad boys host hot springs that are to die for, and Kate has been known to slink off on a Saturday afternoon to soak up a few hours of hot, wet goodness.

2.   Shaken or stirred or however it comes

Kate has quite the soft spot for a well-made cocktail. Her students Tek and Margot abuse this weakness whenever and wherever they can, mostly because they know how much fun she can be once they’ve gotten a few margaritas in her.

3.   Choc-fest

During her days at Oxford, Kate’s frequent visits back home to her parents’ place in London would usually involve a little excursion to her favorite chocolatier in Covent Garden. She is a self-confessed chocoholic. Luckily, she’s met her match in Tom Baker, who is definitely in possession of a very sweet tooth.

4. L-O-V-I-(ahem)-N

It’s no secret that Kate has a healthy sex drive. She has difficulty keeping her hormones in check at the best of times, and when she’s confronted with fine young things strutting around her lab all day— well, let’s just say the illustrious Dr Ramsey likes to work through her tension with a shimmy between the sheets.

5.   Science

Sad but true: Kate is married to her work (at least until Tom comes along to shake up her world). As much as she’d like to pretend she can take her mind off science once she leaves the lab, in truth she’s never really able. Even when she’s curled up at home with a glass of red, she still finds solace in reading about the way the world works, and so she’ll more likely than not try to wind down by picking up an article... or three.
