Review

This is my first Joya Ryan series. I have heard great things so when I had the chance to read the first book in her new series I took it. And let me tell you I will be reading more from her. The writing style was great and the characters were intense and developed well. This story absorbed me and wouldn’t let me go until the end. I can’t wait for the next one.

Lana was an unusual character. She was vulnerable yet very independent. She was educated but in some ways she was really inexperienced. Lana has a past and for the longest time it has played a very active role in her present and future. It also tends to effect any relationships that she has. Jake has been carrying around his own set of baggage. Jake was intense and he is a guy that knows what he wants. Once he has his sight set he goes after it with everything he has. While he has his intense moments the heartfelt and tender ones with Lana are what made the story. He definitely made me swoon.

As the story progresses both Jake and Lana are trying to keep their baggage and their pasts from defining who they are as people. As Jake and Lana become closer the ghosts and the issues come to play a part in controlling the future they are trying to build together. Neither of them are interested in divulging the full story or the full truth about what happened to them, which causes some problems. The moments they do share is heartfelt and sometimes heartbreaking. As the book progresses the issues become more heartbreaking until the last revelations look like ones they can’t recover from.

Joya created a story that had a little bit of everything in it. The story was able to keep the reader on its toes. You never really know what is coming at you until it’s happening. Joya created an intense story with alluring characters. I loved it. The only thing that I did question was how fast Lana gets over her own baggage. It wasn’t big enough that it kept me from enjoying the story but it did make me question it. The book ends on a little bit of a cliffhanger but it also gives us a hint into where Lana’s story is going. Joya’s writing style was beautiful and I can’t wait for more from the Reign series.
