REVIEW: Ash and Ruin Series By, Shauna Granger

There are two inherent truths in the world: life as we know it is over, and monsters are real.

The Pestas came in the night, spreading their pox, a deadly plague that decimated the population. Kat, one of the unlucky few who survived, is determined to get to her last living relative and find shelter from the pox that continues to devastate the world. When it mutates and becomes airborne, Kat is desperate to avoid people because staying alone might be her only chance to stay alive.

That is, until she meets Dylan. Dylan, with his easy smile and dark, curly hair, has nowhere to go and no one to live for. He convinces Kat there can be safety in numbers, that they can watch out for each other. So the unlikely couple set off together through the barren wasteland to find a new life – if they can survive the roaming Pestas, bands of wild, gun-toting children, and piles of burning, pox-ridden bodies.

Review

The world as everyone knew it is gone. The Pestas have arrived and are spreading a pox that is killing people at an alarming rate. The pox is spread through touch. The government is trying to contain the sickness but containment of cities and then bombing them. After both of her parent catch the pox her mother forces her to leave before L.A. is contained. Kat gets out just in time before the bombs fall. Now she is on her and trying to make it to Oregon. After months of being alone she finds a friend in Blue, an abandoned dog and Dylan a boy with no one left.

The first book in the series World of Ash was a great start. We meet Kat and she isn’t someone you would expect to live through the apocalypse. Before everything fell apart she was a girly girl. She loved clothes and make-up. Now she has to learn the skills as she goes to make it in this new world. In the beginning I wasn’t really sure about her character. As the books go on I really started to like her. She grew into her own and became a character that was smart, funny, and brave. Dylan was very naive in the beginning. He hasn’t been through what Kat has and has to learn how dangerous the world really is. He slowly learns how to help and become a team member in the duo.

As a whole the three books in this series were written very well. I couldn’t put the story down. The first one was a little slow. The tension was there but it wasn’t very high. The characters didn’t have very many scary tension filled moments. The first story was filled with them travelling. The next books in the series are definitely tension filled. So if you are looking for that hold on and read the rest of the series. It only gets better.

If you are a lover of apocalyptic stories this should definitely be one for you. There were many moments that I couldn’t help but love. There was a romance but it really took a backseat to the Pestas. I thought the added romance was something that I got really into because I loved and really cared about both characters. This was definitely a great read with a bit of a slow build but definitely worth picking up.
